Where are all my MONSTERS at? ! I make weird stuff for unique people. Angels, devils, ninjas, robots, aliens, mutants, and furries. If you think IMVU is sorely lacking some proper madness, contact me IMMEDIATELY! I can make anything, assuming it's cool. The only thing I don't do is "normal". I could make a plate of eggs and bacon, but if the avie sits down to eat it, the eggs are going to grab a slice of bacon and duel the player to THE DEATH! (I actually might make that)
And I will go the extra mile for a dumb joke.
Somebody asked me to make him a single shoe, so I made this:
(Make sure to turn the music on, I got a kick'n sound track for him!)
Now that you know me, how about some backstory? A real Hero's Origin story! Get some popcorn, it's a long one...
I got started in 3D editing back in high-school, I think in 1992. I traded a flight simulator with a guy who said, "I got this program that'll let you make graphics like Tron". And it did!!! 3D Studio 2.0 for DOS. Yah, DOS (go look it up, kids!). At the time I had NO manual, no YouTube, and no idea what I was doing. So let's just say it took AWHILE to learn the DOS version of 3D Studio on my OWN. But I did it! After all, who's going to turn down TRON??
After working on it for many years, I was getting pretty good, but coming from a small town in Northern California, about 300 miles from San Francisco, I might as well have been on the MOON. Nobody was ever going to see what I could do. Nobody around me even knew what "3D Editing" was. I had skills, but no idea what to do with them.
I did get into mod making for Unreal Tournament (circa 1999), because it ALSO supported 3D Studio (it wasn't the most popular 3D editing app back then). I did some little stuff, but hit it pretty big with Unreal4Ever.
Anybody remember that? At one point we had 250,000 installs, so somebody should! Found this cool German guy who was great at programming but had no 3D editing skills. So we went WILD in that mod! We even won Epic Games international "Make Something Unreal" contest. That would officially make Unreal4Ever the craziest mod on the PLANET!
As the game industry was moving towards higher polygons, each new item took me more and more time to create art for. I could see all our characters needed a high-poly overhaul, and it was just CRUSHING. Back to working late shifts at fast food...
Then a miracle happened! Around 2004 I was watching the TechTV program The Screensavers and I learned of There.com. They mentioned 3D Studio support and I saw an opportunity to show off my skills to some Silicon Valley people.
I started out making a chicken.... and that chicken just TOOK OFF! Son chickens were dotting the landscape of There. I found then all over the place! I made a few more things, which apparently were some of the best looking stuff in the game, according to others. I did have over 10 years experience at this point, so I guess I was pretty good, and had no lack of imagination. It was great getting all of this praise, but it wasn’t getting me any closer to a job.
2 years later, things were going great, I finally moved out of my mother's house! I heard from another developer on There.com that there was this new game called IMVU which was just starting up, and they had NO LIMITS on polygon count, they supported animation, and even scripting! After spending 2 years locked down to static, low-polygon items, this was MIND BLOWING! I had used every trick under the sun to make my There.com items move, or at least fake moving, but now I could really make stuff that was ALIVE again! It was like a return to the good-old Unreal4Ever days. And since I wasn't working with anyone else, I could work as fast as I wanted and do what I wanted.
If you've never seen my catalog before, I am EXTREMELY productive. So my catalog just EXPLODED with items! And I got to stretch the limits of my skills, pushing IMVU to the breaking point with the most advanced techniques I could find.
One example that was a HUGE game changer was the discovery that if you merged Skeletal animations on an avie, with morph animations on what they were holding, you could make one action affect two components at once. This never even occurred to me until one day I saw somebody make this sword their player tossed and caught. The whole animation was very basic and hard to see, but I could see immediately he discovered something utterly groundbreaking.
Now, with the IMVU+ stuff, I've been pulling from my greatest hits from almost 20 years of developing on IMVU and polishing them with stunning new effects - things I learned while using the Unreal Engine. Metallic gleam, particle effects on command, flawless transparencies, and so much more! Even better, I can lower the prices on these renewed items to more market-appropriate rates.
Stay tuned to my catalog to see where this story goes next!

He really can make anything! He made me a skull pet that can put on a beard and Santa hat and change hats and noses!
Because a skull should be able to do that.

Dude, I seriously want to duel a slice of bacon to the death alá TRon in an old school MS Dos turn based text game, maybe some ICQ thrown in for nostalgia. I don't know how one could pull that off, but it would go down as epically God level legendness for us old timers. So cool, I had to make up a word for it.
Going to check out the catalog, great article, definitely brought back good memories!
