Just to reply to this question here (Grams got in touch on Discord).
This is caused by internally attached structure, when making heads anything *inside* the head (like the 'mouth') has to be a continuation of a surface (contiguous mesh flow) or detached to prevent conflicting face normal orientation issues, aka aberrant mesh shading. This is especially so if using Normal Maps.

Oh. I wonder if it an issue of the vertex normals not being consistent across all shapes? Or the normals from the base shape remaining constant when the shape is animated in Studio? Not sure how to test this..

Its strange because inside the 3d program, the shapekeys works perfectly without this strange shading.

@Gramsx I wasnt able to find a definitive answer yet, but from a quick look, I wonder if the faces which are inside the head which go from the back of the throat to the bridge of the nose and around the chin are casting shadows or messing with normals or something along those lines. That would be my best guess if you have a way of moving the faces away from the surface of the avatars head

If there is a will, there is a way! Without seeing the product directly, all we can do is guess what the issue may be. If you would like to email the source file (The one that opens in your 3D software) to studio@imvu.com, we can take a closer look and help guide you how to fix it

Hi @Gramsx, Looks like it may be related to the vertex normals on your mesh. I applied a solid white texture to the head and got a similar result. It looks like you mirrored the head while modeling it because there is something weird going on symmetrically around the mouth.

Hello @Gramsx, Do you know the Product ID of the head product so I can take a closer look at the product?
