I suspect some recent win10 updates, but I'm not sure. The problem is, everything lags horribly in Max since this month, saving the project takes 10-20 seconds (autosave drives me crazy), moving the viewport takes forever to start to move. The FPS is fine, it's the starting of any actions that takes huge amounts of time. The "busy" mouse cursor over the app is also very common.
Yesterday it was all fine again, fast and easy. I don't know what was different. I didn't notice anything. No new apps or anything. The video drivers are fine, resource-hungry games run fast as usual.
Today, my 3ds Max is practically unusable again.
I would get a newer Max if there's any exporters properly working (for IMVU Classic) and backwards compatible.

The toolkit is available from this page! The 3dsMax version is still in beta but that is mainly for the animation exporter, rooms should work well. If you decide to give it a try, feel free to leave feedback!

I think I have likely found out what caused this slowness. First, when I opened Max right after booting up (before opening any other apps and browsers) it was fine even after I opened other apps after that. Otherwise I'd have to restart my PC again. Secondly, the problem seems to be gone ever since my Malwarebytes free trial expired. These 2 are just my guess.
@Drosselmeyer - I heard about that toolkit half a year ago and I'm quite interested and curious to see what it can do when it's available. :) As for FBX, it's usually alright, but one thing makes it very cumbersome for me - it always imports all the materials that I have in Max, not just the materials in use, but dozens of unused materials which I then have to unselect manually during import.

FBX export works for imvu classic and is wayyy faster than the old exporters. Also upon import it converts them to the old XMF XAF XSF files, so if you wish to manually edit them you can open the file folder and do so there.

I have experienced this in the past, but not recently. Sorry, I cannot provide more help. I will suggest that you "could" switch to FBX and use a newer version of 3ds Max :). I am currently working on the IMVU Studio Toolkit for 3ds Max which makes the export process very easy.

Now I was able to finish one of my greatest products ever, rather quickly: https://www.imvu.com/shop/product.php?products_id=64697488
