Im working on blender, i figured out a little bit how to create body meshes on it (though im still having issues making it all match up properly with the avi). But I'm wondering how I can make, for example, a shirt and have the chest change size with it.

When joining the body part and product you created, by default in the materials tab (propreties panel on the right, last square tab) will be "skin [7]" slot that is the material/texture of the avatar bodypart.
To fix that, you need to select the faces of your product and assign a new material to them (see the attached image). There, if the whole mesh UVmaps are properly unwrapped, you will be able to attach the textures on imvu Creator Editor/Studio.
PS: be careful not selecting any faces from the bodypart when assigning the new material to the mesh/product you created.

so i did that, but now the textures won't apply to the ''shirt.'' It only adopts the colour of the texture map.

The Torso and the Shirt should be the same object in Blender, (Selecting the body part and the product mesh, then press Ctrl+J to join them together).
Basically, if you give the Torso a more muscular shape (being carefull not to modify bounds of the hands, neck and waist), then, you can create the shirt on top, You will see on Imvu it will be more muscular too. Nevertheless, you can add "Scalers" to change sizes and enhance body parts if rigged properly.
