Since I can't derive from a sexless accessory, I need to derive from Male or Female Empty Accessories. Having derived from Male, and set it to Unisex in settings, I can't access the item with a female avie. It won't appear in searches while in the Desktop IMVU app.
This might be a Desktop issue, as I can access it in the Mobile app. I just tried it in the Web app, and it also had the same issue as the Desktop.
