Hello,

I'm encountering an error message that reads, "There was a network problem getting the avatar info," every time I launch the classic client on both my PC and laptop. As a result, I can't access dress-up, rooms, messages, or any other features. I've tried troubleshooting extensively: clearing the cache, switching routers, disabling the firewall, and reinstalling the client multiple times, even downloading the classic client on my laptop but nothing has resolved the issue. To test further, I created a completely new account with fresh credentials, only to receive the exact same error. This suggests the problem isn't related to my account or hardware. I've submitted a support ticket but I thought i'd create a topic too as I wait for a response. Any guidance or assistance you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi, PatSmith.

The VPN masks your IP address as if you were located in a different country. You can download and use Proton VPN for free but you'll have to create an account with them to download it. When you're finished setup (if it doesn't do it automatically) just press "Connect" and it should change your IP address bypassing the network error. I suspect IMVU servers have flagged multiple users IP addresses by mistake and that's why using a VPN works, at least for me it does.

Da3n3ryz, thank you for you response.

I'll definitely try out some of those suggestions that I haven't tried yet like the DNS settings, Local Security Policies and Compatibility Mode. I should hear back from IMVU support soon, so I'll see if it's a problem their end first which i suspect. In the mean time, using a VPN to change my IP address is a great work around which I've previously posted about.

Thanks a lot!

Hi @JennyJan26 It sounds like you've already done a thorough job troubleshooting the IMVU client issue. Here are some additional steps and considerations that may help resolve the "network problem getting my IMVU avatar info" error:

1. Check Server Status

  • IMVU Server Status: Sometimes, the problem may be on IMVU's side. Check the official IMVU status page or their social media channels to see if there are any ongoing issues or maintenance.

2. Update Network Drivers

  • Network Drivers: Ensure that your network drivers are up-to-date. Sometimes outdated drivers can cause connectivity issues.

3. DNS Settings

  • Change DNS: Try changing your DNS settings to use Google's DNS:
    • IPv4: Set DNS to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.

    • IPv6 (if applicable): Set DNS to 2001:4860:4860::8888 and 2001:4860:4860::8844.

4. Proxy Settings

  • Disable Proxy: Ensure you are not using a proxy. Go to your network settings and disable any proxy settings that might be enabled.

5. VPN

  • Using a VPN: If you use a VPN, try disabling it or connecting through different servers. Conversely, if you're not using one, consider trying to connect through a VPN.

6. Windows Firewall & Antivirus

  • Recheck Firewall/Antivirus: Even though you disabled the firewall, sometimes antivirus software might still block certain connections. Try temporarily disabling it completely to see if that resolves the issue.

7. Run as Administrator

  • Run Client as Administrator: Right-click on the IMVU client icon and select "Run as Administrator." This can help if there are permission issues.

8. Compatibility Mode

  • Compatibility Mode: Try running the IMVU client in compatibility mode (e.g., Windows 7 or 8).

9. Local Security Policies

  • Check Local Security Policies: On Windows, ensure that your security policies allow for network connections from applications like IMVU.

10. Community Forums

  • Seek Community Help: Since you've created a topic, engaging with the community can also yield practical solutions, as other users may have faced similar issues.

Next Steps

Keep an eye on the support ticket for updates and responses. IMVU support may provide specific steps if the issue is widespread or specific to your account.

If you've tried all of the above and the problem persists, it may be necessary to wait for a resolution from IMVU support.

Thanks

Hi PatSmith, try Proton VPN, it's free. I found that changing your IP address bypassed the network error. You can also submit a ticket at the top of this page and ask support to unlist/unblock your IP address. I'm still waiting for a response from them myself. I'll use the VPN in the mean time until they fix the problem.

Woo-hoo! I think I have solved it, using a VPN lets me back into the IMVU Classic client. So yeah, IMVU must have flagged my IP address by mistake. I'm still waiting for a response to the ticket that I submitted to support, I'll paste my IP address and ask them to unblock it when I am contacted.  :)

With the help of AI, i tried Port Forwarding. I tried these virtual servers individually but I still get the problem. Can anyone tell me if I am even doing this correctly? What ports does IMVU Classic use? and what Protocol, TCP? I'll attached the photo of my virtual servers I created below:

Thanks so much! :)

Thank you for your help, Petrazenka, I greatly appreciate it, as I'm feeling quite lost with this issue. I can tell you've put real time and effort into helping me. Thank you! :)

I did turn off my anti-virus firewall completely and retried IMVU, but I still got the same error. I was afraid this might be related to the firewall or port forwarding because I know nothing about those and find them hard to understand. I'd need to follow a guide of some sort in order to attempt firewall permissions or port forwarding. I wonder if a system restore would help, however as I have mentioned IMVU classic has the same issue on my laptop too, so that rules out my PC being the issue.

Thanks so much for helping. Sorry I can't provide much else, i find this all confusing.

Have you tried to remove the firewalls permissions for IMVU and then restarting PC and then granting access permission back again?

There might also be additional firewalls in your security / anti virus programs that need to be reset for each version of Classic IMVU.

Remember to restart PC each time a setting is changed.

A network issue and try again later.

Maybe it's an actual network issue between you and the internet providers used by one of the IMVU server, the one for Classic.

My Windows 10 version IMVU Classic is running smoothly.

I suspect that the troubles are either found on your system or that it's actually a network issue since some of the folk I have been hanging out with also use IMVU Classic and are not having issues like you currently are.

Be glad that the IMVU servers for NEXT and Mobile are working for you.

I have tried to help but I don't feel I am getting anything for it. If you want more help then please make it worth my time.

Thank you, Petrazenka.

I found some older versions of the Classic IMVU client installer. One of them indicated that IMVU no longer supports it and prompted me to update. I tried installing the others, and now I receive this error message:

When one downloads IMVU one is actually downloading a zip file folder that upon download completion allows IMVU to be installed. Since this folder isn't an actual IMVU file it will not be removed when clicking the uninstall IMVU button found in Settings / Apps / Apps & Features. This means your PC will most likely already contain several installer folders. Mine are stored in my documents, the path is shown in the 4th picture below.

Just pick one of your previously stored IMVU installers. Click on it to install that version.
