Feature Request: Add AAC/AAC+ Audio Stream Support for Web Radios in 3D Chat Rooms

I would like to submit a feature request regarding the live audio streams in chat rooms.

Currently, IMVU’s built-in media stream support is restricted almost exclusively to the MP3 format. While functional, this limitation creates unnecessary barriers for creators, room owners, and broadcasters:

  • High Bandwidth & Server Costs: MP3 requires significantly higher bitrates (typically 128 kbps to 320 kbps) to achieve acceptable sound quality, driving up server hosting and bandwidth costs for independent web radio operators.

  • Modern Efficiency with AAC: The AAC / AAC+ (HE-AAC) codec delivers superior audio quality at a fraction of the bitrate (e.g., crystal-clear sound at 48–64 kbps). Supporting AAC would dramatically lower server overhead, reduce bandwidth usage for both hosts and listeners, and ensure smoother playback with less buffering inside rooms.

  • Broader Station Variety: Because AAC is the current industry standard across online broadcasting, supporting it would allow users to integrate thousands of modern online stations rather than remaining limited to the few legacy providers offering MP3 streams.

IMVU continues to evolve and modernize its platform, especially with today's advancements in development tools and multimedia standards. Adding native AAC stream decoding would be a massive quality-of-life update for room hosts and the entire music-loving community.
