Whether you’re hosting big parties or hanging out with an intimate group of friends, engaging with your room participants and fostering a more positive environment is essential to being a successful Live Room Host.
In fact, Hosts that engage their audience and create a positive and safe space within their rooms have been shown to attract more users and get more Tips!
In this article, we’ll share some best practices on how to engage with your audience and moderate your Live Room by taking advantage of all the moderation tools available within each feature. Follow these tips to become the Host everyone is talking about!
How to engage with your audience
Take advantage of all the cool features available in Live Rooms to spice things up for your audience.
Voice
Got something to say? Voice gives you the ability to voice chat in Live Rooms. The ability to turn on Voice is exclusive to users who are a part of the new Tiered VIP Program. Once Voice is turned on, the Host can begin broadcasting their voice to all users in the room. They can even share the mic with audience members to give everyone a chance to participate! Don’t be shy and share your voice with the world!
To learn more about the Voice chat feature, check out our article What is the Voice chat feature.
YouTube Video
Whether you’re having a movie night or have a funny video to share, YouTube Video is the feature to use in your Live Room. YouTube Video gives you the ability to play videos (music videos, movies, podcasts, and more!) in a Live Room through a furniture item. Let the cat videos commence!
To learn more about YouTube Video, check out our article What is YouTube Video?
NOTE: The YouTube Video player is not compatible with iOS. If you are using a YouTube player in your room, iOS users may not be able to view it.
Polling
Create a whole new level of engagement through Polls. Pageants? Shows? Contests? Whether you're deciding who won the fashion show or just asking your viewers how they’re feeling that day, IMVU's new Polling feature is the best way to drive engagement in your Live Room. Polling allows you to create multiple-choice questions that your viewers can vote on, much like casting a ballot.

Games ideas
Want to play a game? Aside from Voice chat, YouTube Video, and Polling, be creative and use anything in your room to create a fun game for your participants.
Here are some fun game ideas you can try:
Emoji Translation
- Host Whispers a phrase to a player.
- That player tries to write that phrase out in the chat using only emojis.
- The first person who guesses it wins and goes next.
Finish the Song Lyric
- Host sings a song lyric through the Voice chat feature or types it in the chat.
- The first person to accurately guess the following line wins and goes next.
Two Truths and a Lie
- Host writes out three facts about themselves in the chat. Two are true and the other is a lie.
- The first person to guess the lie wins and goes next with their two truths and a lie.
To make things more interesting (and competitive!), consider gifting the winner of your games a treat from their wishlist or any other prize.
Gifting
Who doesn’t love to receive a gift? Give audience members a pleasant surprise by gifting them something off their wishlist or sending them Credits.
To learn more about gifting, check out our articles How to gift an item and How to gift in IMVU Website.
How to moderate your rooms to foster a more positive environment
Toxicity is out and good vibes are in. An awesome Host not only creates a fun and engaging experience for their participants but also maintains a safe and positive space for everyone.
While Hosts can select Moderators to assist them in ensuring a positive and engaging experience in a Live Room, it is primarily the Host’s responsibility to prevent any inappropriate conduct from occurring and to take swift action if and when it does.
This section is to remind you and your participants how to handle a misbehaving user and how to host a room with safety in mind.
Whisper
Use Whisper as a discreet way to warn someone who is misbehaving in your room.
To learn more about Whisper, check out our article What is the Whisper feature?
Assign Moderators to your Live Room
Live Room owners can select trusted friends as Moderators of their rooms. Selected Moderators can remove users from the room when they are misbehaving.
To learn more about Moderators in a Live Room, check out our article Live Rooms and FAQs.
Voice
VIP Hosts should be mindful of who they invite to speak and make sure someone is present at all times to monitor the conversations (text or spoken) taking place in their Live Room.
The Voice feature was designed with safety in mind. Hosts have the power to mute, remove, or report other users if they encounter inappropriate behavior.
To learn more on how to mute, block, or report abuse for the Voice chat feature, check out our article Keeping everyone safe while using Voice.
YouTube Video
As a Host, be mindful of the videos that are played from YouTube. To maintain a safe platform for our users, we expect everyone to comply with our Terms of Service and Community Guidelines even through videos that are played.
Educate your participants on how to mute YouTube if they don’t want to listen to the video being played. There is a speaker icon on the top left-hand corner of your screen that can be toggled off for users that don’t want to listen.
To learn more about YouTube Video and how to flag an inappropriate video being played, check out our articles Using YouTube Video on IMVU Mobile and Using YouTube Video on IMVU Desktop.
NOTE: The YouTube Video player is not compatible with iOS. If you are using a YouTube player in your room, iOS users may not be able to view it.
Chat Moderation
Any user (VIP Host, Moderator, Presenter, Viewer) can report another user whether it’s for inappropriate behavior, Voice comments, or chat messages. Simply click on the user’s avatar in the room, the chat comment, or the room settings menu.
Everyone on IMVU should play their part in keeping rooms safe and respectful (and fun!). Here are some things we recommend to keep in mind the next time you’re in a room to connect with friends, new and old.
Respect everyone
IMVU is a 3D metaverse, but in the end, you are dealing with real human beings. Though some may be rude at times or fail to show the same level of respect to others, you must lead by example.
Greet newcomers
Understand that new participants may feel ignored and leave the chat if they are not acknowledged shortly after making an effort to say “hello.”
Keep the discussion going
Feel that awkward silence coming up? Bring up random topics, any of which can spark a new conversation to keep the chat flowing.
Spread positivity
A negative attitude or comment can easily ruin a person’s day so try to keep things light and fun for your participants.
Handle rude people properly
More specifically, “kill them with kindness” to show that they are failing to get the better of you. Once they are dealt with, discourage chat members from discussing the situation. Rude people want to be the center of attention, so do not give them any additional attention. They are not worth it.
Become an IMVU Featured Live Room!
Featured Live Rooms are the best of the best rooms, with Hosts that focus on engaging their audience and making sure that their room is a safe and positive space for all who visit it.
If your room gets chosen as a Featured Live Room, it will be highlighted in the monthly Community Digest and promoted within IMVU. However, any behavior that violates our Community Guidelines within your Live Room may result in your room being removed from this "Featured Live Room" list and all privileges being revoked.
