Effective February 19, 2015, IMVU has provided a way to set products to "Display Only". This allows the items to be visible, but unpurchaseable. Furthermore, this lets you showcase the creations you do not wish to sell.
With this addition, there are now five states of products in the IMVU product Catalog:
Unpublished. These products cannot be seen or used by anyone except its Creator. Hence, it cannot be purchased by other users.
Published. These products are sent to Peer Review, and placed on the Catalog as soon as it passes.
Hidden. A hidden product cannot be gifted or purchased.
Visible. These products are visible on the Catalog, and can be purchased and gifted.
Display Only. These products are visible on the Catalog, but will not show a price. It cannot be purchased or gifted. However, a Creator may derive from it (provided the product is set to derivable).
These states can be triggered at any time.
Why are you changing the functionality of “hidden”? Why do we have to make products visible to gift them now?
This is to curb bad actors gifting UFI products while they are hidden. If you’d like to gift your GA or AP items, you will need to make them visible, even if briefly. If you are a custom-product Creator and you want to ensure your custom creations can be visible to clients, you can continue to do what many others do: set your products as visible but with a high profit. Doing this allows you to gift your clients, and your profit will go back to your account.
Where do I access the Display Only feature?
STEP 1. Go to Create Mode within IMVU Classic (IMVU Client). When uploading, you will see the Display Only option under Controls:
STEP 2. Click the Submit to Shop button and verify that your item says "Display Only" on your product page. You will need to publish it, and it will need to pass Peer Review before it becomes available, just like all products.
STEP 3. If you wish, you can default all new submissions to "Display Only". This can be done via Account Settings. This is especially useful if you have an alt dedicated to custom products.
What are the things I could do with a Display Only product?
Here are the list of things you can do when your product is set to "Display Only":
View the item in Shop or view its product page (customers, creator of product)
Try it on in Shop
Add it to your wishlist (but it will not be purchasable)
View its derivation price in Create Mode
Derive from it, if it is set to derivable
Flag it
View its Derivation Tree (if applicable)
Other users may:
Wear it in Chat, if they already own the product before it is set to "Display Only"
Write a review for it, if they already own the product before it is set to "Display Only"
When can I use the "Display Only" mode?
Here are the usual reasons to use the "Display Only" mode:
Custom products. Show off your skills while keeping your item unique and your customer happy. Set your custom items to "Display Only" after gifting or selling it to your customer.
Contest prize. Show off the grand prize or trophy for your contests while controlling who receives it (change product to Visible before gifting).
High-priced stickers, 3D products. You no longer need to set your items to high prices to discourage purchasing
Meshes. Meshers no longer need to worry about plain meshes being purchased if they are set to "Display Only". If you set your product as Derivable and "Display Only", you can show off your new meshes while allowing your derivers to create new derivations.
How can I see the derivation cost of a Display-Only product? Display-Only products do not show a price.
Find the product you want to derive from, copy the PID (the last digits in the product page URL) and open up Create Mode. Click on Derive New Product and paste the number into the text box. It will populate the product’s information, including derivation costs.
